It was a very cold windy afternoon, so the fact that we were playing top of to league with eight of our players going out the night before didnt really help!
When everyone had turned up we had a look at the state everyone was in and went for a 3-5-2 formation. Daren had to go in goal because of an injury. Alan was back in the team after missing the last game and Neil started his first outfield game since the first game if the season.
It was the usual start for us letting a goal in early on. We were dealing with most of the high balls though (WELL ALAN WAS!). Rich still wouldnt head the ball and tried using his chest at every opportunity. So with the score at 0-1 thanks to the defence being pushed up to far you could tell the way the game was going to go. One nil became Two Nil. Broadway played a ball over the top for there striker to run onto, then in everyones mind apart from the refs Alan made a wonderfully timed tackle. But wait the refs given a penalty. So to the penalty, with Daren in goal for the first time this season this wasnt good so early in the game. Broadway took the penalty and GOAL number 2. It was lucky though as Daren did get this long legs to the ball only for it to fly high into the roof of the net. 2 nil down with us playing like a bottom of the league side, but wait. The ball broke to Dave and GOAL, and what a goal it was. So from nowhere we were right back in the game 2-1. The next 5-10 minutes was when the fastest football was being played, with both teams pushing forward to get the all important next goal. But when you are at the bottom of the table things dont go your way. Alan, are hero at back for the game had to go off due to a injury to his hamstring . We had to reshuffle our defence, pushing Rich (OUR BEST HEADER OF THE BALL) into the middle and Mark out to the left of the back three. We held out for a bit longer but with no one of great experience at the back we let in another goal. And as usual goal No. 3 was the killer for us. 3 quickly became 4,5,6 and then 7!
Those last 5 goals, all in the FIRST HALF were due to mistakes by our own players. After Alan had gone of we needed someone with a bit of spirit to help bring the team back to life. This was brought by Derrick, who had Broadway using every trick in the book to upset him. But sad to say it worked and in the second half Derrick had to be subbed.
In the second half we went from a 3-5-2 formation to a 4-4-2. Simon back to right back, Mark went to left back with Neil & Rich in the middle of defence. The midfield was sent up with Ian wide left, Derrick wide right (replaced by Stu), Mike & Paul in the middle with Gary and Dave upfront.
What a difference the second half was and the phrase "Its a game of two halves" was fitting for this game. Broadway still pushed forward thinking there were plenty more goals in it for them. But a renewed spirit from us held them at bay for long periods. Now as the game went on and Stu on for the subbed Derrick, both teams were wondering where the next goal was going to come from. But it came in the end and it was to Broadway. This now making the score 8-1. So were we to crumble like we did in the first half? NO! We battled on and guess what? WE scored! As the ball broke loose on the left hand side of the box Ian was there to stab it home. (only just as he took his time while everyone else was hoping he was going to hit it earlier, but hey he scored didnt he?). Both teams still pushing forward and hoping for more the game was very open and entertaining. We played the ball upfield for one of our big frontmen and Gary was onto it like flash. GOAL! Again another lovely goal from the Argonauts. But back came Broadway to score goal number 9.
So the game ended 3-9. What a game it was though! If only we played the 1st half like the 2nd, who knows what would have happened? But we can take the memory of two great goals scored by Dave & Gary.
