This pre-season friendly saw both teams at Argonauts FC come off the back of a challenging last season. After having a lack of regular first team players Argonauts FC had to drop one of their two teams and consolidate into, what appears to be, a stronger, single first team squad.
The afternoon game was against Hope and Anchor and was an away fixture played at Penpark, Southmead.
A purposeful start saw the Argonauts take an early lead with a break away goal being scored within the first five minutes. However the lead was short lived, Hope and Anchor were awarded a free kick on the edge of the area, and a direct shot through a poor wall levelled the score.
But Argonauts fought back resiliently and the score rallied several times before the half time whistle. Some great work up front from new signing Tommy Short and a well taken header from an in-swinging corner saw Argonauts walk off the pitch at half time one goal down with the score at 5 – 4.
Argonauts started the second half brightly with an eminent self belief, and after much hard work they approached the hour mark with a narrow lead, the score at 6 – 7. Yet as the hour turned, Argonauts somewhat unfamiliar defence capitulated conceding a flurry of goals, taking the score to 9 – 7 in Hope and Anchors favour.
Ultimately Hope and Anchor showed their desire for victory was greater, and in the last fifteen minutes of the game they scored a further two goals past a tired Argonauts side that were hindered by a lack of available substitutes. The final score ended at 11 – 7 to the home side.
Argonauts showed much premise in this pre-season friendly and the team should be encouraged by the attacking prowess and some adept passing which was displayed throughout the course of the game. As the new faces amongst the squad begin to settle, and as players return to match fitness, Argonauts will be looking for a positive start to the season.
