On Friday April 1st
2005, Severn Beach Fusion & The Argonauts football clubs held a joint quiz
night for the first time. The venue
was Henbury Old Boys, a club where some of the players (especially Rob the
gaffer), enjoyed numerous moments of glory and heartache.
Rob seemed the obvious choice to host the competition, as he wanted to
use the quiz books he purchased a few years ago.
With Pete behind the bar manning the pumps, Billy setting up the
microphone and vocal aids for Rob and Jase collecting the money for entry (£2),
everything and everyone were raring to go.
Five rounds of ten questions, was the
itinerary for the contestants. Round
one was movies, two was music, Football comprised the third, people & places
was round four, and lastly the most difficult was pot luck.
The team with the most points at the end would collect a £25 cash prize
to fill their wallets.
Fifty questions later, “The 23 Quid
Spunk Bubble Farters”, team members: Dave Willett, Ross “Spins” Holbrook
& former
“Captain Average” Mike Bazza Wilcox came out on top, with 31
points out of 50. It has to be said
that they lead from the front and never looked back.
After the third round, a massive 9/10 on “football” gave them an
almost unassailable lead. They won
by one point from “The Bar Stewards” who gave them a good fight on the last
round. Well done lads!
After
the main quiz, Rob hosted a purely football round.
This was opened to individuals only and they paid £1 to enter, the last
person standing collected the prize. Contestants
called a page number and question as Rob read the question from the book.
Bazza again did well, but Mr. Ben Tuck held him off and collected the
cash prize. It’s understood that
he will spoil Teddy and buy him a new scarf.
It must also be said that Scottie shamed himself by helping his Dad and
his Best Chum, Nibs, by calling the answers out.
He was duly kicked out of the competition, CHEATS never win Scottie!
